San Diego Wave Head Coach, Casey Stoney, is not letting Florida Govenor Ron DeSantis keep her from taking a stand against his discrimination towards the LGBTQ+ community. San Diego played the Orlando Pride in Florida on Sunday and did not miss the opportunity to wear rainbow t-shirts that featured a Pride Flag with the word “Gay” on the back.
Florida Govenor, Ron DeSantis, signed into law the Parental Rights Education bill also known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill back in March. It says parents have the right to sue school districts under the circumstances of… “classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”
But it’s fine and developmentally appropriate to talk about heteronormative orientation right? That makes sense… NOT!
Stoney explained why she took to the field with these t-shirts, “I’m a gay female and I don’t feel welcome in this state. And I think it was a stand for us as a club to stand up for certain policies so that all communities can feel safe in any states.”
San Diego is a team that demands to be seen and heard. In their inaugural season, they have managed to secure a spot in the NWSL playoffs. It’s doubtful this dynamic team will take any breaks in standing up for marginalized communities.
So let’s all just SAY GAY!
